The Aln 773 railcar was designed by Officine Meccaniche (OM, Milan) in the early 1950s.

Ordered in 1955, construction was carried out by OM and Fiat Ferroviaria from 1956 to 1962.

The Second World War had a significant impact on the industry between 1943 and 1948.

Services were provided from 1957 to 1993 by 78 railcars and 56 Ln 664 trailers. The service continued until 1998 and 2018, outside of the FS.

FS livery from 1957 to 1965:

• Light gray rocker panels in the center and brick red at the ends
• Cream body
• Wide green band at the windows

FS livery from 1961 to 1993:

• Magnolia green rocker panels in the center and vermillion red at the ends
• Fog gray body
• Wide magnolia green band at the windows
